Surgery is only the first half of recovery. What happens in the weeks and months after — how well you manage swelling, stiffness, scar tissue, and restricted movement — makes a big difference to how fully and quickly you get back to normal.

Massage therapy is one of the most useful tools for post-surgical recovery. Many patients assume they need to wait until they’re fully healed before trying it, but in most cases starting at the right time — with the right approach — actually speeds things up. At Rishaan Physio & Wellness Clinic in Mississauga, our RMTs work alongside our physiotherapy team to support patients recovering from a wide range of procedures.

What Surgery Does to the Body Beyond the Incision

Surgery creates a ripple effect throughout the body:

  • Swelling — the area fills with fluid as part of the healing response, causing pressure and tightness
  • Muscle guarding — surrounding muscles tighten protectively around the surgical site, sometimes staying locked up long after the initial healing is done
  • Scar tissue — as the incision heals, tissue can form that feels tight, pulls on surrounding areas, or restricts movement
  • Compensation patterns — when one area hurts or can’t move properly, the rest of the body compensates, creating secondary pain and tension elsewhere

Massage therapy helps address all of these — which is why it pairs so well with physiotherapy in post-surgical care.

When Is Massage Therapy Safe After Surgery?

Timing depends on the type of surgery and your surgeon’s instructions. As a general guide:

Away from the Incision — Almost Immediately

Even when it’s too early to work near the surgical site, massage can begin quickly in surrounding areas. If you’ve had knee surgery, your RMT can work on your hip, lower back, and calf right away — reducing the tension that builds while you’re protecting the knee.

Near the Incision — Usually 6 to 8 Weeks

For most surgeries, work closer to or on the scar typically starts once the incision has fully closed and your surgeon has confirmed it’s healing well — usually around the six to eight week mark. Always bring your surgeon’s discharge instructions to your first appointment.

What Techniques Are Used

Scar Tissue Massage

Once the incision has closed, scar massage is one of the most valuable things you can do — and one of the most commonly skipped steps in recovery. Scar tissue can become tight and restrictive if left alone. Gentle, specific techniques applied to the scar help soften it, improve its flexibility, and prevent it from pulling on the tissue around it. Most patients find it becomes more comfortable over multiple sessions as the scar loosens.

Lymphatic Drainage

A very gentle technique that helps the body clear excess fluid from swollen tissue. It’s particularly useful in the early post-surgical weeks when swelling is significant. The technique is lighter than a regular massage — almost like a gentle skin-brushing feeling — but very effective for reducing post-surgical swelling.

Muscle Tension Release

Releasing the guarding and compensation tension that builds up around and away from a surgical site restores normal movement and reduces pain. This is often where patients notice the most immediate relief.

What to Tell Your RMT Before Your First Post-Surgical Session

  • The type of surgery and when it was done
  • Any complications during or after the procedure
  • Current medications, including blood thinners
  • Your surgeon’s specific restrictions or precautions
  • Any areas of numbness or unusual sensation

When in doubt, bring written clearance from your surgeon before we begin work near the surgical site.
