One of the most common questions our Registered Massage Therapists hear at Rishaan Physio & Wellness Clinic is: “How often should I actually be getting a massage?” The honest answer is that it depends — on why you are getting massage therapy, what your body is dealing with, and what your goals are.

This guide breaks down the recommended massage frequency for the most common situations we see in Mississauga — from chronic pain and injury recovery to stress relief and general maintenance — so you can make an informed decision about your care.

There Is No Single “Right” Answer

Massage therapy frequency is not one-size-fits-all. A competitive runner training six days a week has very different needs from someone managing arthritis pain or recovering from a car accident. What works for your neighbour may not be appropriate for you.

That said, there are well-established guidelines that give a useful starting point for most situations. Here is how our RMTs at Rishaan Physio typically approach frequency recommendations.

Massage Frequency by Goal

For Chronic Pain (Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches)

If you are managing ongoing pain — whether from muscle tension, arthritis, disc issues, or a longstanding injury — the standard recommendation is once per week or once every two weeks during the active treatment phase.

This frequency allows the therapist to build on the progress from each session before muscle tension has fully returned. Most patients dealing with chronic pain notice significant improvement after four to six sessions at this frequency, after which the schedule can often be reduced to monthly maintenance.

For Injury Recovery

Whether you are recovering from a whiplash injury, a rotator cuff strain, or a sports injury, massage therapy is most effective when it is frequent enough to keep pace with the tissue’s healing cycle. In the early stages of recovery, once or twice per week is typical — often working alongside physiotherapy at the same clinic.

As healing progresses and pain reduces, sessions can be spaced out to bi-weekly and then monthly. Your RMT and physiotherapist will guide this progression together.

For Stress and Anxiety

For patients whose primary goal is stress management, mental relaxation, and nervous system regulation, once every two to four weeks is generally sufficient to maintain the calming effects of massage therapy on the body.

The parasympathetic nervous system response triggered by massage — reduced cortisol, lower heart rate, improved mood — tends to last one to two weeks in most people. A bi-weekly schedule keeps you in that window consistently rather than letting tension fully rebuild.

For Athletes and Active Individuals

Athletes and people who train regularly benefit from massage therapy timed around their training cycle. During heavy training periods, once per week is ideal — helping clear metabolic waste from muscles, reduce soreness, and prevent the accumulation of trigger points that cause injury. During lighter training phases or off-season, bi-weekly or monthly sessions are sufficient to maintain tissue quality. We cover this in more detail in our guide to sports massage in Mississauga.

For General Wellness and Maintenance

If you do not have a specific injury or chronic condition but want to maintain muscle health, reduce stress, and prevent problems before they develop, once a month is a commonly recommended maintenance frequency. Think of it like a dental cleaning — regular upkeep prevents the build-up that leads to bigger problems down the road.

For Prenatal Massage

During pregnancy, once every three to four weeks during the second trimester is a typical starting point, increasing to bi-weekly in the third trimester when discomfort tends to peak. Always confirm with your obstetrician before beginning prenatal massage therapy, and ensure your RMT has training in prenatal techniques.
