Call (905) 800-1661“How many sessions will I need?” is one of the first questions new patients ask at Rishaan Physio & Wellness Clinic — and it’s a fair one. You want to know what you’re committing to before you begin.
The honest answer is that it depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and your overall health. But there are clear patterns that give a useful starting point for most situations. Here’s how our chiropractors in Mississauga typically think about it.
There’s No Single Answer — But There Are Patterns
Think of chiropractic care like physiotherapy or dental treatment. A fresh acute problem usually resolves faster than something you’ve been living with for years. And just like a dental cleaning, some people benefit from ongoing maintenance even after their immediate issue is resolved.
For Acute Pain (Recent Injury or Sudden Onset)
If your pain started recently — within the last few weeks — your body is in the active healing phase and tends to respond quickly to treatment.
- Typical range: 4 to 8 sessions
- Most patients notice meaningful improvement within the first 2 to 3 visits
- Sessions are usually twice a week at first, then spread out as you improve
Examples: a new lower back strain, a stiff neck after sleeping awkwardly, a recent sports injury.
For Chronic Pain (Months or Years)
If you’ve been dealing with pain for a long time, the body has often adapted around the problem — muscles have tightened, joints have stiffened, and movement patterns have changed. This takes more time to unwind.
- Typical range: 10 to 20 sessions
- Improvement is usually gradual — expect to notice change over weeks rather than days
- After an initial intensive phase, sessions space out to weekly and then monthly as things stabilise
Examples: chronic lower back pain, long-term neck stiffness, recurring headaches, sciatica that has been present for months.
Not sure how many sessions you’ll need? Start with one.
At your first visit, our chiropractors assess your condition and give you a clear treatment plan with a realistic timeline. No commitment needed before you come in. Same-day appointments available.

Lower Back Pain
One of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor. Acute lower back pain typically responds in 4 to 8 sessions. Chronic lower back pain may take 12 to 20 sessions before it’s consistently well-managed. Maintenance sessions afterward can prevent flare-ups.
Neck Pain and Stiffness
Neck problems — especially desk-related or posture-related — usually respond within 6 to 10 sessions. If headaches are part of the picture, it may take a few more sessions to fully address.
Sciatica
Sciatica varies quite a bit depending on the cause. Mild cases may resolve in 6 to 8 sessions. More severe or long-standing sciatica can take longer, particularly when combined with physiotherapy for core strengthening.
Headaches
Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (caused by neck issues) respond well to chiropractic — most patients see improvement within 4 to 6 sessions, with ongoing maintenance helping prevent them from coming back.
Maintenance Care: Do You Need to Keep Going?
Once your symptoms have resolved, continuing with occasional maintenance sessions is a personal choice — not a requirement. Many patients find that monthly or bi-monthly check-ins keep them feeling well and prevent recurrence, particularly if they have a physically demanding job or sport. Others are happy to come back only when symptoms return.
At Rishaan Physio, we never pressure patients into ongoing care they don’t need. Your chiropractor will be straightforward with you about when active treatment is done and what, if anything, makes sense after that.
Signs Your Treatment Is Working
- Pain is reducing in intensity, even if slowly
- You can move more freely than when you started
- Your good days are outnumbering your bad days
- Activities that were difficult are getting easier
If after 4 to 6 sessions you haven’t noticed any change at all, it’s worth having an honest conversation with your chiropractor about whether the treatment plan needs to be adjusted or whether a different approach — like physiotherapy or imaging — would be more appropriate.
