Call (905) 800-1661Your body gets stronger and faster not during training — but in the recovery period after. If your recovery is slow, incomplete, or constantly disrupted by soreness and tightness, your ability to keep training consistently takes a hit.
Registered Massage Therapy is one of the most practical recovery tools available to athletes at every level — from recreational runners and weekend hockey players to competitive lifters and endurance athletes. At Rishaan Physio & Wellness Clinic in Mississauga, our RMTs work with athletes across all sports to speed up recovery, prevent injury, and keep them training without constantly feeling beat up.
How Massage Therapy Helps Athletic Recovery
Reducing Post-Training Soreness
The muscle soreness that peaks 24 to 48 hours after a hard workout is caused by the build-up of waste products and inflammation in the muscle tissue. Massage improves circulation through the muscles, helping clear these out faster and deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients to healing tissue. Most athletes notice a significant reduction in how long and how severe their soreness is with regular massage therapy.
Preventing Injury
Most sports injuries don’t come out of nowhere — they’re the result of muscle tightness, small adhesions, and movement compensations that build up quietly over weeks of training until something gives. Regular massage catches these patterns early, while they’re still minor, before they turn into a tear, strain, or overuse injury that forces you off the field.
Maintaining Muscle Flexibility
Repetitive training in the same movement patterns gradually tightens and shortens muscles. A runner’s hip flexors, a swimmer’s chest and shoulders, a cyclist’s hamstrings — all become progressively stiffer with training volume. Massage therapy keeps muscle length from degrading between sessions, maintaining the range of motion and movement quality needed for good performance.
Reducing Knots and Tight Spots
High training volumes reliably create muscle knots — tight, tender areas that reduce muscle strength and alter how you move. Regular massage prevents these from accumulating by releasing them early, before they become a persistent source of pain or a movement problem.
Improving Sleep and Recovery Quality
Intense training keeps the body in a heightened state of alertness that can interfere with sleep — and sleep is where most of your actual recovery happens. Massage therapy’s calming effect on the nervous system helps athletes sleep better, which directly improves how well the body repairs itself overnight.
Train harder. Recover smarter.

After a Hard Session (24–48 Hours Later)
A recovery massage the day after a hard training session or competition focuses on improving circulation, reducing soreness, and restoring muscle length. Pressure is moderate — this isn’t the time for deep intensive work. The goal is to recover faster so you’re ready for the next session sooner.
During a Heavy Training Block (Weekly)
Weekly massage during a high-volume training block keeps tissue quality high throughout the block and reduces the injury risk that comes with increasing load. Think of it as maintenance that keeps the engine running smoothly.
Before Competition (2–3 Days Out)
A lighter session two to three days before a race or game reduces tension and optimises how the muscles feel — without the fatigue that deep work can temporarily cause. Avoid deep tissue work within 24 hours of competition.
Off-Season
The off-season is the best time for deeper, more therapeutic work — addressing the chronic patterns and accumulated tension that built up during the season. Monthly sessions during the off-season help the body reset properly before the next training cycle begins.

Athlete Massage Combined with Other Treatments
The best recovery programmes combine massage with other treatments. At Rishaan Physio, our team works together under one roof:
- Sports injury physiotherapy — when injury does occur, physio addresses the structural cause; massage prepares the tissue for rehab
- Shockwave therapy — for stubborn tendon issues (Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff) that need more than massage alone
- Custom orthotics for runners — correcting foot mechanics reduces the abnormal loads that lead to overuse injuries
